The Department of Chemistry  stands for excellence  in chemical education and research. It has a strong record of achievement in chemical science with the support of a dynamic faculty  team. The areas covered under the department’s teaching       include fundamental chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and Analytical chemistry

Year of Establishment

The undergraduate Department of Chemistry was established in 1990. After increasing interest and success at GSG, in 2008, the Chemistry Department was expanded to include a post graduation programme as well.

Aims and Objectives of the Department :

  • To create interest in Chemistry and use the knowledge of Chemistry for upliftment of the society.
  • Emphasis on awareness about the importance of protection and conservation of our environment.
  • To create scientific and technological awareness among the students.

Vision of the department:

To capture the innovative capabilities of the students through a dynamic learning environment and promotes applied research to cater the professional requirements of the industries and community and develop entrepreneurship attitude amongst student .

Mission of the department:

To create this department as a center of excellence with dynamic teaching – learning environment that strives for research, creativity and product development with project based learning

Scope of the Subject:
Chemistry is an exciting and challenging experimental science, which helps us to understand our world. Being one of the central sciences, it deals with the study of matter and its interaction with other matter and energy. It is fundamental for understanding other science disciplines like material science, biology and medicine. Chemistry frames knowledge of the natural world and continues to bring new technologies that are useful to every aspect of human life. Chemistry interfaces with a myriad of other disciplines and fields. The highly prized nature and diverse curriculum of Chemistry sets the foundation for extremely productive and exciting career in a variety of disciplines as pharmaceutical, agrochemical, mineralogy, molecular biology, biotechnology, nanotechnology, polymer technology, food/drink industry, etc. The importance of Chemistry is growing over time and it will remain a promising career path.

Teaching methods:

  • Formal system of chalk and talk at UG level is adopted.
  • Interactive teaching
  • Student participative teaching
  • OHP assistance
  • PPT presentations
  • Problem solving sessions
  • Seminars
  • Group discussions

Evaluative Methods:

Besides the continuous assessment process adopted under CBCS – CGPA system following practices in addition are observed in the department for evaluation of courses taught.

  • Conducting unit tests in class.
  • Preparatory test at the end of syllabus.
  • For PG courses the evaluation is made on the basis of presentation , seminars, home assignment ,etc.

Community service:

Faculty members of the department provide voluntary consultancy services to local industries and farmers for waste ,food ,food adulteration, soil and plant analysis. These involve analysis of water (fluoride, arsenic etc.), food samples for pesticides and other organic materials. The results are utilized by individual persons and societies of the residential areas. On oral request faculty members frequently used to visit local industries  to discuss their problems.

Soil Analysis:

Soil analysis project run by the department with the help of soil testing kit supplied by Our Management. (TRANSCHEM AGRITECH ltd VADODARA Gujarat ) since 2014-15 . By which we can determine nine parameters , such as  pH, Organic Carbon, Nitrate-Nitrogen, Ammonical-Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Sulphur.

We not only analyzes soil sample but also gives advice to farmers depending upon soil analysis results.

MENTOR  SCHEME

We, The Department of Chemistry, run a mentor scheme for undergraduate students for first year, designed to help students to settle in to University life during first year in the Department.

This scheme is run to provide friendly advice and support on both academic and more general matters.

We match first year students to current undergraduate students from the same college and they meet on a regular basis to discuss a wide range of issues such as:

  • New ways of studying
  • Setting in to accommodation
  • Budgeting
  • Modular choices
  • Assignments, Projects,  Practical’s,  Examinations.
  • Important employability skills.  Etc.

In a competitive job market graduates need to be demonstrate transferable skills. This scheme provides a wonderful opportunity to develop, enhance and evidence those skills.

BEST PRACTICES OF THE DEPARTMENT:

  • Food adulteration: Awareness and simple tricks for the determination in common food
  • Laboratory chemical safety and risk management
  • Bridge course is organized for B.Sc. and  M.Sc. Students.
  • Organizing guest expert talks
  • Educational tours organized.
  • Make laboratories open for school students.
  • Soil analysis activity run by department
  • Departmental library.
  • Project work for M.Sc. Students.
